Charles
Allen Kimball, one of the most prominent residents and business men of Salem,
New Hampshire, and vicinity, was born July 17, 1876, son of Charles Franklin and
Martha Ella (Copp) Kimball (see preceding biography).
The old family homestead, scene of his birth, was named after the place of his
residence. He was a student in the local public schools and also at Tilton
Seminary, Tilton, New Hampshire. He was for a time after the completion of
his education associated with his father in attending to the agricultural
interest of the latter. In 1898, the firm of C. F. Kimball & Son, grain
and lumber dealers, was organized, and for many years this partnership
continued. Mr. Kimball is now engaged in farming at Salem on an extensive
scale, and is also identified with large lumbering operations at Alexandria, New
Hampshire. he early built for himself and family a distinctive country
residence, one of the finest in the state.
A Republican in political belief, he served his constituents as a member of the New Hampshire Legislature in 1915, and was street commissioner one term; he has upon three occasions been called upon by his townsmen at Salem to be a member of the Board of Selectmen, having been a chairman of that body at one time, and also a member of the State General Court, 1915-16. Active in religious affairs, he has for many years served as steward of the Pleasant Street Methodist Episcopal Church and has been treasurer for years, as was his father. He is a member of Enterprise Grange, Patrons of Husbandry, and of the United Order of Pilgrim Fathers.
On November 16, 1898, at Salem, New Hampshire, Charles Allen Kimball married (first) Lena Hall, born at Salem on October 30, 1874, died on January 7, 1917. he married (second), on November 12, 1919, at Salem, Ada L. Hall, sister of his first wife, who was a native also of Salem, born on January 8, 1879, daughter of Oscar O. Hall, born in Salem on May 4, 1843, whose wife was Henrietta E. (Cross) Hall, likewise a native of Salem, where she was born on July 15, 1845.
The children, who are named hereafter, were all by the first marriage of Mr. Kimball and born and reared in Salem, New Hampshire:
1. Gertrude H., born on April 2, 1900.
2. Charles Lester, born on August 6, 1902, he married
Jeanette DoSault.
Children: 1. Charles Lester, Jr., born November 3, 1926
2. Elizabeth Francis (adopted), born January 26, 1922
3. Ruth E., born on April 20, 1906.
4. Elizabeth F., born on February 4, 1910 (now deceased).
5. Richard G., born April 22, 1913
